A buyer’s guide to neoprene rubber strips

Neoprene rubber strips have an impressive multi-industry capacity, but do they meet your business requirements? Discover the advantages, properties and uses in this blog.

Neoprene rubber is a renowned sealant solution, demonstrated by its overwhelming popularity across multiple industries for various applications. Neoprene rubber strips are just one of many products using this high performing synthetic, but is it the best solution compared to all the other rubber adhesive strips available to the market

Read on to discover the properties, advantages, and uses of neoprene strips to see if they fit the requirements for your manufacturing and production needs.

Neoprene rubber strips have an impressive multi-industry capacity, but do they meet your requirements? Read to discover the advantages, properties and uses.

What is neoprene rubber?

Neoprene rubber, also known as “polychloroprene”, is a synthetic rubber produced by the polymerisation of chloroprene. “Polymerisation” is a process where small monomers combine to create polymer chains of three-dimensional networks through a chemical reaction. Invented in 1930 by DuPont scientists, neoprene was first created as an oil-resistant alternative to natural latex rubber.

Neoprene belongs to a dynamic family of synthetic rubbers. Its solid closed-cell or open-cell properties are produced to protect an extensive range of commercial applications for various purposes, such as electrical insulation, elastomeric membranes, or automotive sleeves.

Commonly used as a waterproof seal, neoprene rubber is applied across several key industries, including the automotive, electrical and construction sectors. Neoprene rubber provides a shore hardness of 60° ± 5° with a defined texture known for its smooth finish on both sides. Neoprene strips can also be blended to create a sponge, ideal for providing waterproofing and NVH (Noise, vibration and harshness) for rooftop products and drainage applications. We define polychloroprene as the main component of neoprene by its temperature and chemical resistance.

What are neoprene rubber strips used for?

Neoprene rubber strips work as an external seal and serve multiple industries for manufacturing purposes. Due to its watertight capabilities and chemical/temperature resistance, neoprene rubber strips are applied widely across the automotive industry. Such neoprene rubber strip applications include:

  • Automotive interior cabins
  • Automotive roof rails
  • Ventilation ducting seals
  • Touch screen displays
  • Lighting systems
  • Wire and cable insulation
  • Belts, springs and gaskets
  • Flexible mounts
  • Hoses
  • Adhesives

Neoprene strips are made with open-cell and closed-cell formulas to serve numerous applications. While closed-cell neoprene rubber strips are ideal for waterproofing, open-cell examples allow gas and fluids to pass through products within a controlled setting and environment.

7 advantages of neoprene rubber strips

Now we have a bearing on what defines neoprene rubber and the versatile application of neoprene rubber strips, here are seven benefits that can suit your businesses manufacturing purposes:

1. Perfect sealant

Neoprene rubber strips provide exceptional sealant properties against air, dust and water mitigation. By hardening under compression, neoprene rubber guarantees a watertight seal for your production requirements.

2. Temperature resistance

Neoprene rubber strips have impressive thermal stability, making them versatile across temperature extremes (-40 °C to +120 °C). Although neoprene rubber is not considered flame-resistant, it is much less flammable than other commercial rubber materials.

3. Versatility

By providing industries with sealant and durable solutions, neoprene rubber strips boast flexible attributes with modifiable polymer structures available to suit different requirements.

4. Chemical protection

Strong chemical resistance means neoprene rubber strips remain resilient against numerous substances, including oils, solvents, and petroleum-based liquids.

5. Weatherproof

Neoprene strips can also provide protection against environmental factors such as UV, ozone and oxidation. This makes neoprene strips suitable for any products that may belong outside.

6. Proven durability

Neoprene rubber strips are tear-resistant and remarkably durable while adhering to multiple materials and fabrics with self-adhesive qualities.

7. Conversion capabilities

Neoprene rubber strips are convertible to accommodate multiple custom applications, including material slitting, adhesive laminating, die cutting, CNC machining, fabrication, and overall assembly.

The disadvantages of neoprene

The cost is one disadvantage of neoprene compared to other rubber strip materials. But for what you pay for, no other rubber strip solutions offer the same versatility and performance.

Some other rubber strip materials can cope better with water, acid, esters, ketone and specific hydrocarbons. However, neoprene still offers a more than comprehensive option across various applications.
