What does EPDM stand for?

EPDM stands for “Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer” and is a synthetic rubber material widely applied across multiple industries. What is an EPDM gasket?

An EPDM gasket is a seal made from rubber that helps prevent leaks between surfaces. Often applied in mechanical applications, gaskets fill the space between mating surfaces or joints.

Examples of these components can include piping and fitting flange faces, mating surfaces from automotive cylinders, water tank rims, door edges and frames. What distinguishes an EPDM gasket from other seals is that gaskets offer relatively static capabilities as a seal, while other seals suit more dynamic environments involving active aspects like pumps, engines, or rotating components.

How are EPDM gaskets made?

EPDM gaskets can be made in a variety of ways. But most commonly, EPDM gaskets get formed either through die-cutting or hand-cutting. Both methods satisfy the precision required for accurate gasket composition. However, each suits specific requirements.

For example, die-cutting suits small to large gasket production volumes. It offers accuracy at affordable rates and provides bespoke sizes to meet your exact application preferences. On the other hand, hand-cutting is ideal for smaller, more specialised EPDM gasket batches. Manufacturers can produce bespoke gaskets for niche purposes. Therefore, it’s ideal for prototyping and product testing.

EPDM gasket advantages

Now we have a firm understanding of EPDM gaskets, what advantages make it such a popular choice of gasket across industries?

Durability

EPDM gaskets have an incredibly stable chemical composition. This design means the membrane does not brittle with age. The remarkable longevity of EPDM rubber gaskets provides a life expectancy of 50+ years. Despite being a flexible material, EDPM gaskets can still govern an impressive tensile strength at ASTM D2000 Specification of 2031 psi

Flexibility

EPDM rubber gaskets can remain flexible even in low temperatures, ensuring you gain a reliable seal across all environments and industrial conditions. Plus, EPDM gaskets can also adapt to their environment, such as when metal ducting experiences dimensional changes when exposed to temperature fluctuations. EPDM rubber gaskets will respond to these transitions while sustaining a leak-tight seal.

Temperature resilience

EPDM rubber gaskets are resilient in withstanding temperatures ranging from -20°C to +70°C without losing its sealing capabilities.

Weather resistance

Ideal for outdoor or applications often exposed to the weather, EPDM rubber gaskets demonstrate excellent weatherproofing properties across ageing, UV, ozone, and oxidation resistance.

Chemical protection

Alongside weatherproofing and withstanding extreme weather temperature ranges, EPDM rubber also provides superior resistance to chemicals. Across various acids, ketones and alkalis, EPDM ensures a long-lasting seal that can cope in environments where chemicals are prevalent.

Waterproofing

Unphased by moisture, EPDM gaskets wash off water with its smooth surface and edges while protecting any material or underlying surface beneath. Therefore, EPDM rubber gaskets are popular in waterproofing industries, such as plumbing, marine and roofing.

NVH solution

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) is a common issue across many forms of machinery. For example, fans and motors that cause vibrations within electrical devices and HVAC systems are reducible using EPDM gaskets to remove vibration transmission.

Versatility

Finally, EPDM rubber gaskets are also incredibly versatile, serving multiple applications and industries. From piping seals to heat exchangers and car engines, EPDM gaskets offer high-performance properties regardless of your requirements.

EPDM gasket industries and applications

The versatile nature of EPDM rubber makes it an ideal gasket to serve numerous industry applications. Some of these industries and applications include:

Automotive

Bonding well with metal sees EPDM prevalent in engine seals, door seals, and weatherstripping components. EPDM gaskets offer a protected barrier against moisture, chemical and temperature fluctuations, making them an ideal gasket solution for the automotive industry.

Construction

The overall weatherproofing advantages of EPDM rubber make it an ideal gasket for construction projects. Construction applications suitable to EPDM include roofing systems, windows, and doors.

HVAC

EPDM gaskets are often employed in HVAC systems to ensure air-tight seals and reduce NVH while preventing energy loss and maintaining cool temperatures.

Plumbing

Widely applied in microscopic gaps for piping, faucets and fittings, EPDM rubber gaskets help prevent leaks by maintaining watertight seals.

Electrical

EPDM gaskets help protect electrical components in devices and panels against moisture and environmental elements.

Marine

Used as sealants in boat hatches, windows, and doors by providing waterproof seals, EPDM rubber gaskets are used abundantly across marine applications, including saltwater environments.

Food and beverage

As a hygienic, high-performance, and reliable seal, EPDM gaskets are suitable for applications in the food and beverage industry, such as food processing equipment.
